This talk is about how the American philosopher Stanley Cavell comes to write about the film His Girl Friday (1940), and the larger genre of what he calls Hollywood Remarriage Comedies, through his earlier work on “other minds,” Shakespeare, and romanticism. Along the way I offer some remarks about the specifically Emersonian conception of the heroine that Cavell finds in this American film. My presentation will include the first 10 minutes of the film.
