Richard Rorty has been criticized for his contrasting appraisal of feminist and antiracist concerns, which has been read to indicate a racial bias. This article defends Rorty from this criticism, first clarifying his view of the discontinuous relation of philosophy to politics, then showing how any inconsistency in his approach to race and racism is only apparent. Finally, revisiting Rorty’s exchange with Nancy Fraser, the conclusion is reached that although Rorty has no philosophy of race, he does offer a strong antiracist politics.
