Abstract:
Henry Bugbee uses the metaphor of reality as wilderness to profound effect in The Inward Morning. In this project, he draws on a particularly American understanding of and affection for wilderness. Many years later, he turns briefly to the project of defending wilderness areas. Bugbee’s earlier metaphysical use of wilderness brings both challenges and help for the justification of wilderness preservation. On the one hand, if all reality is wilderness, why preserve a forest? On the other, he gives us intriguing reasons to take the natural scientist seriously as an authentic reporter of value.
